| Abuse
is when someone continues to treat you in a way that makes
you feel uncomfortable after you have told him/her how you
feel and asked him/her to stop. There are four major types
of abuse: emotional, physical, sexual, and economic. All four
types may be used in battering. |
| Emotional
or Psychological abuse involves
systematically destroying another person's self-esteem by
using the following methods: intimidation, harming, or threatening
to harm the victim or the victim's pets or loved ones; threatening
to commit suicide or to leave; playing mind games; forcing
the victim to perform humiliating tasks; extreme controlling
behavior, and blaming others for his/her actions. |
Physical
abuse includes kicking, hitting, biting, pushing, choking,
hair pulling, restraint, assaults with weapons, torturing,
burning, confining, or physically hurting another person in
other ways. |
Sexual
abuse includes any forced or coerced sexual activity including
marital, date, or acquaintance rape; incest; sexual insults;
any type of sexual penetration or touching without consent. |
| Economic
abuse includes withholding information about finances; gaining
control of another's money and other assets by manipulating,
coercing, lying, stealing, borrowing, forging signatures, or
misrepresenting facts. |
